Anne-Marie Jackson – Shaped

Sabbia Gallery is pleased to present this beautiful solo exhibition of ceramics by Anne-Marie Jackson, the 2013 winner of the Sabbia Gallery Solo Exhibition Prize for National Art School Graduates in Ceramics.

My art practice focuses on the relationship of objects to their surrounding environments and to each other. My current work has been made by altering wheel thrown ceramic vessels by pushing them against different surfaces and objects. This process leaves impressions on the work and highlights the malleable quality of the clay. I am particularly interested in the contrast between soft round clay objects and the typically hard rectilinear spaces in which they sit. I see this contrast as a metaphor for the human body in the built world. Vessels have long been associated with the body and I have found that distorting the forms and creating interactions between them serves to further animate the work. My interest in space, form and materials stems from my former career in interior design.
