Scott Chaseling – An Antipodean Journal
As one of Australia’s most celebrated glass artists, Scott Chaseling has continually entwined his narrative within his rich painterly glass pieces. His works read like a canvas, telling a story that often reflects key moments in Scott’s life, or issues close to his heart.
This series of work, An Antipodean Journal, draws on Scott’s undertakings as a Research Fellow overseas, and his narrative reflects the inverted Antipodean, the Australian in the UK.
‘I am inverting our understanding of the term “the Antipodes”. As this is a British construct and is used to define Australia, I am taking a more literal approach and use the term to bounce it back. As one who comes from Australia, our Antipodes then must be the UK, metaphorically and less geographically.’
This exhibition marks a shift away from techniques that Scott has traditionally used as he has employed casting and etching within his work. Painting still forms a strong foundation of the work, and through casting Scott has enabled the paintings to ‘swim’ within the thickness of the glass, the pieces also displaying a highly polished surface and a reduced form.
The scale of the pieces suggest a master glass artist, looking for further challenges within the medium.
All work from An Antipodean Journal was developed and created during Scott’s time overseas and will be the first showing in Australia. A hotly anticipated exhibition, please be sure not to miss this one!!
