RITA KELLAWAY – Subterraneum

Sabbia Gallery is pleased to present this solo exhibition from the 2023 Sabbia Gallery Ausglass and Mentorship Award Recipient Rita Kellaway.

For close to twenty years Sabbia Gallery has offered an award at the Ausglass conference. The prize is a two year mentorship and then a solo exhibition at Sabbia Gallery. The award is offered to an artist with under five years practice within glass. This years award went to South Australian artist Rita Kellaway.

Rita was a standout amongst the other eligible artists. Her professionalism and quality of craftsmanship for an artist of so few years of practice was extraordinary.

Rita says of her work:

Nature’s geological mark-making – fractals and fissures emerging from the alchemy of glass powders and sheets colliding and melting.  I seek to create fascinating combinations of colour, texture, form and lines, through the kiln-firing and casting techniques I use to replicate ancient and ongoing geological processes of our planet.

Subterraneum is a new body of work inspired by the geological marvels of the natural environment where I live and create at Port Noarlunga, on Kaurna land, in South Australia.  An area of geological significance, featuring eroded cliffs exposing multiple layers of ancient, multi-coloured sedimentation and the meeting of the ancient Onkaparinga (Ngankiparinga) river with the waters of St Vincent Gulf.
