Hannah Gason explores light and its ability to both articulate and create an illusion of space in her chosen material of glass.
Working with the interaction of light and architectural forms, Gason looks to the work of pioneer abstractionist Frank Hinder. Light, movement, harmony and order, and later, geometry and luminosity were integral to Hinder’s work as he designed many of the decorative elements of Canberra’s centre, including Monaro Mall and Civic Square.
This new work engages viewers through the transformative and illusionary effects of light and shadow when glass is added to the mix, much like the shifting shades and textures of the gold glass-mosaic tiled columns designed by Hinder that frame CMAG and border Civic Square.
Shades of Shadows is currently on exhibition at Canberra Museum + Gallery until 17 Nov 2024
