From 2 March – 20 October 2024 – this group exhibition at CMAG entitled ‘Materiality but not as we know it ‘ explores the fluidity to the questions – What does the adage ‘truth to materials’ mean today? When does a sculpture become a functional design object? Featured are new and recent works by 10 artists and designers, including Mel Douglas, who each have an association with the Canberra region.
Mel’s beautiful collection of plinth and wall works encapsulates a sense of form, mark making and tone within glass.
In a recent artist statement Mel states : ‘My work explores and interweaves the creative possibilities of this liminal space, where the form is not just a support for drawing; but a three-dimensional drawing itself. Using the unique qualities of the material, and the rich potential of mark making on and with glass, I am using line as a way to inform, define and enable three-dimensional space.’
