Sabbia is pleased to present the first ever solo exhibition from Hermannsburg ceramic artist Beth Mbitjana Inkamala.
Beth Inkamala was born in Alice springs in 1977, and is the niece of prominent potter Clara Inkamala. Judith Inkamala is her nanny. She grew up in Hermannsburg, where she recalls observing her aunties working with pottery in the 1990s. As an adult she moved to Papunya with her husband and child, where they remained for 9 years. During this time Beth worked at the local council in administration while painting at the art centre in Papunya.
In 2014 Beth starting making her own artwork, developing a distinctive style and has dedicated more and more time ceramics. She is disciplined in her work, using the hand coil technique and her distinctive contemporary approach to painting. This will be Beth’s first solo exhibition, and she is looking to create a hugely ambitious body of work that details, celebrates and depicts her beloved community of Ntaria.
Beth is the current Chairperson for Hermannsburg Potters and is an important figure at the art centre. Her dedication to and interest in her local community and the world around her is taking her from strength to strength.
These pots hold the memories of a childhood at Ntaria—
days shaped by water, sun, and red earth.
We swam and fished in the Lhara Pinta (finke river)
our laughter carried along its banks.
and music filled the mission grounds,
Fires roared into the evening with roos tail cooking,
where stories were shared and food was cooked,
Life was simple, full, and good.
These memories live on in clay—
held, shaped, and remembered in every piece.
