JEFFERY MINCHAM AM – Resonance
Over five decades, Jeffery Mincham AM has maintained a creative output widely acclaimed in Australia and overseas. Continuing his exploration of landscape themes through ceramic forms that are often substantial in scale, he is a highly influential and respected professional in his field, being recognised in 2009 as a Living Treasure: Master of Australian Craft.
The winner of many awards and prizes over his long career, he is extensively represented in over 100 permanent public collection in Australia and overseas. These include the National Gallery of Australia and all Australian state galleries as well as most regional galleries. He is also represented in significant private collections in Australia and throughout the world.
As a long and very dry summer gradually surrenders to a lingering autumn, the shadows grow longer and the palette changes to a myriad of resonant hues with occasional flashes of brilliant colour; it is a time of reflection. In the evenings, the setting sun casts a striking orange light along the ridges of the ranges; it passes quickly as the valleys fill with a soft blue haze of smoke-filtered light from the annual burning-off of summer’s detritus. It is a landscape transcended.
For the past thirty years, I have been making works that reflect upon landscape. It has been a continual evolution of process and technique that has kept my ‘explorer’s spirit’ alive. Driven by a desire to find new forms that have an ease of expression and naturalness that resonates with the elements in play, I am prepared to take risks. There can be disappointment of course, but unexpected outcomes can open a whole new pathway. I am after all an artist and maker, and I make to understand and, of course, to see what comes next.
