Patterns of Pressure

27 Aug - 26 Sep 2026

Liam Fleming is a Tarntanya (Adelaide) based glassblower, artist and designer with a decade‑long practice defined by sculptural objects that explore the intersections of craft, art, design and architecture.

His work has been exhibited widely, including regular presentations at Melbourne Design Week, and internationally at London Design Week, Milan Design Week, and Australia Now in Berlin. He has received significant support for his practice, including a full scholarship to the Pilchuck Glass School (2018) and an Art Gallery of South Australia artist bursary (2020).

Fleming has presented demonstrations and talks in Venice and New Zealand, and undertaken residencies in India, Mexico, Italy and the USA. He has been recognised as a finalist in major awards such as the Fuse Glass Prize (2018, 2022), Tom Malone Glass Prize (2019), and the Ramsay Art Prize (2021, 2025). He was awarded the Tom Malone Prize in 2023 and was a finalist in the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2026.

His achievements led to the prestigious 2021 Guildhouse Fellowship, culminating in a 2023 exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Fleming’s works are held in private collections worldwide and in public collections including Artbank, AGSA, AGWA, Parliament House Australia, Powerhouse Sydney, and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Patterns of Pressure explores the idea that solidity is an illusion. Through mould blown and kiln-formed glass, I push the material just beyond its expected limits, allowing heat to soften certainty and reveal transformation.

The work reflects my understanding of the body as a process rather than a fixed form. Like glass, we exist in continual states of heating, cooling, expansion, and contraction. What appears solid is, in fact, always changing.

As our attachment to fixed form begins to dissolve, new possibilities emerge. The work invites a movement away from grasping and certainty toward openness, where space is created not by adding more, but by letting go. In this space, transformation becomes possible – for the material, for the body, and for the way we perceive ourselves.
