LIAM FLEMING

29 Aug - 26 Sep 2026

Sabbia is thrilled to present this long awaited solo exhibition from South Australia’s incredible glass artist Liam Fleming.

Liam’s practice has been grounded in a disciplined approached to making, having been an associate at the jam factory after graduating from the University of South Australia in 2011. During his time at the JamFactory, Liam was the Production Manager in the glass studio and collaborated with many other makers across the broad material-based organisation. These collaborations allowed Liam to develop a keen awareness to creating successful works, and some designs were shown during both the Milan and London Design weeks. Fleming also exhibited in Berlin during the Australia Now with the assistance of the JamFactory and Canberra glassworks.

Fleming has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including a finalist in the prestigious international Loewe Craft Prize in 2026 and the Ramsay Art Prize 2025. His works are held in private collections around Australia, as well as in the public collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Artbank, Sydney, and the Australian Parliament House Collection.

His works are characterised in minimalist sculptural objects, where he fuses segments of glass forms together using a traditional Venetian encalmo technique – using colour to link and surprise the palette. These highly crafted sculptures are then placed in the kiln where the undergo one last transition, where the glass softens and the forms slump into amorphic slouched sculptures. Cleverly, the surface is then manipulated to expose the linear qualities of the works, where they sit in a compelling tension between soft and hard, straight and curved, light and dark.

This exhibition marks a significant development in Fleming’s recent practice. Following his sell‑out presentation with Sabbia at Sydney Contemporary in 2024, he has continued to refine and expand this body of work, producing several major commissions in its wake. His new sculptures extend this trajectory with clarity, ambition and a deepening exploration of form, colour and material behaviour.
