NICK MOUNT – Physical Things

Nick Mount is one of Australia’s most accomplished and celebrated studio glass artists. Nick’s earliest and most enduring influences include the US west coast glass scene and the traditions of the Venetians.

His longevity as a leading glass artist and designer is testament to his virtuosity with the medium and intuitive ability to let it speak for itself. Founded in the historic and cultural traditions of the Venetians, inspired by the collaborative nature of studio glass and cultivated by the local and international glass community, Nick’s work tells a uniquely Australian story. It is a story of partnership and persistence, industry and innovation, experimentation and growth.

He is an advocate for communal training and production. He has a reputation for being a generous mentor and regularly collaborates with a team of highly skilled glass blowers. In a career spanning 50 years, Nick has made a significant contribution to the development of studio glass as an artistic medium in Australia and is celebrated as a master of his craft.

Building on my series of scent bottles, fruit, and still-life compositions, these works are an invitation to pause and reflect.

Glass, with its duality of fragility and resilience, is a medium that mirrors life itself. Through the interplay of vibrant hues, fluid forms, and craftsmanship, I aim to evoke delight and curiosity with beauty through form, texture, and translucency.

Each piece is a dialogue between tradition and innovation, paying homage to the craft of glassblowing while seeking new expressions. This body of work is a celebration of my enjoyment of the process, the tactile connection between creator and material, the sensory, and the ephemeral—the elements that make life a rich, shared experience. We all can learn about ourselves through the labour of making physical things.
