petrichor

Sabbia is pleased to present this group exhibition curated by Sean Morris. For those that have visited our gallery space and know the hidden delights of Sabbia’s extensive stockroom, petrichor presents a carefully selected body of work from this space, representing the best of 2024. The exhibition also features new works by our artists responding to the exhibition theme and introduces exciting new makers for this exhibition.

The title ‘petrichor’ is the smell of rain. It is the pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.

The word comes from the Greek words ‘petra’, meaning stone and ‘ichor’, which in Greek mythology refers to the golden fluid that flows in the veins of the immortals.

In Australia, a mostly hot arid landscape, petrichor is a symbol of a break in a drought or heralds a long awaited change in a weather pattern, and is something that is looked upon as a positive and uplifting change in the outlook.

For this Summer Salon, Morris has focused on works that evoke this unique summer weather experience, from the dry and arid, to the floods and storms of summer in Australia.
