Matthew Curtis – Edge

Sabbia Gallery is pleased to present this solo exhibition of new works in glass by Matthew Curtis. He has developed a rigorous material-based practice, focussed on the shifting qualities of glass. His affinity, dexterity, and experience are extensive and experimental. He researches and experiments with unconventional approaches, extending traditional techniques. Curtis was introduced to glassblowing through an informal apprenticeship, assisting at Denizen Glass in Sydney in the early 90’s. Since then, he has exhibited extensively. His blown and cast glass objects capture transparent hues which fade and gather in intensity. His keen eye for symmetry and mathematical precision have become peripheral, yielding a more meditative approach to the alignment of form. His current work investigates margins and boundaries. Subtle intersections which magnify the minutia of biological structures and patterns. For Curtis these intersections become metaphors to reflect upon how objects or ideas might yield and accommodate each other, to fit together harmoniously.

CARLENE THOMPSON

Sabbia is pleased to present new works in ceramics from Carlene Thompson, a multi disciplinary artist whose materials and processes span across painting, ceramics, printmaking, wood carving and fibre based art. She is a senior artist and community leader in Ernabella, and has been heavily involved in a number of project based art collaborations that have toured nationally. She is also an independent artist, working from the Ernabella Art Centre and has been instrumental in encouraging future generations of APY artists to follow in her footsteps. The intergenerational transfer of Indigenous and cultural knowledge is a priority for Carlene, particularly the passing of knowledge down to her daughters and her artwork often features families of birds.

HONOR FREEMAN – all that was solid is liquid

Sabbia Gallery is pleased to present this solo exhibition of new ceramic works by Honor Freeman. Clay is a material that embodies both control and chaos. Ideas of containment occupy the making and embrace clay's capricious nature in this new suite of work. All that was solid is liquid plays with ruptures, leaks, and growths, highlighting the tensions between material dualities: soft/hard, beautiful/ugly, fragile/durable, liquid/solid. Ordinary and seemingly insignificant items intimately connected with the body—chewing gum, soap, towels, pillows, hot water bottles—are cast in porcelain and transformed, becoming strange souvenirs and nostalgic relics from the domestic landscape. These ubiquitous objects, caught between discarded beauty and unsettling decay, reflect their leaking and rupturing states. Honor Freeman, 2024
